About the Newcastle Neigbourhood Association

Welcome to the Newcastle Neighbourhood Association website! Our mission is to bring people together to preserve, enhance, and share our connection to this neighbourhood. Our goal is to improve the quality of life in Newcastle and we invite local residents to become involved.

A bit of history: The original Newcastle Neighbourhood Association became dormant a decade ago. In September 2007, a few neighbours who had been doing garbage and safety checks in the area on an individual basis decided to reactivate the NNA for the purpose of neighbourhood beautification (planting trees, etc.). A year later the group realized that development was coming their way. Hotels and highrise condos were going up and it looked like strip malls might be next. The Association’s goal has never been to try to halt change but to influence its direction in the best interests of the people of the neighbourhood and the city as a whole. By the end of 2009, the NNA had 65 members of whom four were also board members. Two general meetings had been held. Neighbourhood cleanup campaigns were organized and a row of trees was planted along Vancouver Avenue. The NNA is now providing input to the City of Nanaimo which is creating a Neighbourhood Plan for Newcastle and Brechin Hill to guide future development projects and improvements in these areas. The NNA is currently seeking a public venue in the area where monthly meetings can be held.
